Richard Nixon was president-elect. Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated. The Beatle's Hey Jude was No. 1 on the charts. It was 1968 and Tony Bennett released his last Christmas album. Until now.
Maybe it took 40 years because he wanted to be sure he got the songs and arrangements just right. Maybe it was because he wanted to wait and introduce his daughter, Antonio Bennett singing with him.
It doesn't really matter why. The end result is Tony Bennett as we know him and love him. His voice, the arrangements, the Count Basie Big Band and the choice of songs all add up to make A Swingin' Christmas
a Christmas hit!
His daughter Antonia joins him in the Irving Berlin masterpiece, "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm". Her father has set the bar very high - but Antonia meets the challenge.
Sammy Cahn's "Christmas Waltz" and the all-time classic favorite "Winter Wonderland" are only two of the superbly done cuts on this disc.
There are ten in all including, "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "My Favorite Things", "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and "O Christmas Tree". Each song is done in the jazz-meets-tradition-meets-excellence-meets-swing sound that only Tony Bennett and The Count Basie Big Band could have put together.
If you think you have enough Christmas music - think again. No collection is complete without the addition of "A Swingin' Christmas"
In fact, you will find yourself playing this CD after the holidays, just to listen to some classic big band arrangements.
