Nela Park GE Christmas Lights Display 100th Anniversary Noble Rd. East Cleveland December 16, 2024
Nela Park in East Cleveland was the first industrial park in the world.
It began in 1879, when Thomas Edison invented the carbon filament lamp. The General Electric Company was formed by merging the Edison Electric Company and the Thomson Houston Company on April 15, 1892. That year, the company employed 10,000 people and had $20 million in sales.
At the turn of the century, entrepreneurs Franklin Terry and Burton Tremaine organized the National Electric Lamp Company (NELA) in Cleveland. GE invested in the company although it was a competitor in order to further the goal of standardizing the GE-invented screw base. Most of the lighting breakthroughs of the last century were developed there.
For 100 years GE has decorated their campus at Nela Park in East Cleveland, Ohio for the holidays. Over the years they have showcased the latest and greatest lighting technologies and developments in the display. For many years, people could drive through the campus of Nela Park for the display. More recently, the display has been along Noble Rd. in East Cleveland with the center at their main entrance of GE Lighting, a Savant company, at 1975 Noble Rd. The display goes south up the hill from there and north down the hill a little. It's really an amazing display.
This year's theme is "100 Years," because the first display was 100 years ago in 1924. You will see a 30 foot birthday cake as well as a huge candle facing Noble Rd.
The large tree in the center is a replica of the national Christmas tree in Washington DC. GE has been sponsoring the national tree in Washington DC for 63 years and has a replica in East Cleveland.
If you get a chance you should visit. The lights are on 24/7 through January. 6, 2025. If you can't visit, this is my walk through starting at the top of the hill.
