In this novel, the author follows the renowned detective Christopher Banks from an orphan in Japan to a highly respected detective and sought-after society figure in London.

Mr. Banks is eventually humbled as he is drawn back from the security of his present life to investigate the disappearance of his parents from Japan when he was a child.

If you enjoy this book you may also like The Remains of the Day, the most well known of the Ishiguro novels.

In this book we are transported into the mind of an English butler who, in the boundaries of his own confining world, has reached perfection.

The butler has spent his entire life seeking this level of "greatness" only to become outdated and the sole misunderstood relic of a lifestyle that no longer exists.
