Euclid's Senior Rockettes
Almost 20 years ago (1983) a group of seniors in Euclid decided to form a dance troupe fashioned after the famous New York Dance Company. Under the direction of Sonia Barron with the choreography of Sally DeAngelo this group performs at various senior centers, churches, private parties, parades and festivals.
They have traveled as far as the Columbus State Fair and have won a multitude of trophies and blue ribbons for their energetic and beautifully composed dance steps and exhibitions.
They have been recognized by the Ohio House of Representatives and the Department of Aging as well as former-governor Richard Celeste. Past-mayor Guinta always told they Rockettes "You put Euclid on the map!"
All of the donations they receive for their shows are given to the Euclid Senior Program, which is one of the reasons they received the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000.
All of the dancers are amateurs, with the exception of Pinky Arnoff, who was once a professional. Pinky dances solo in between acts, while the other dancers change costumes.
Their ages range from 61 to 87 and every one of them is spry and agile. "I try to stay in shape by keeping moving, but it does get harder after awhile" says 86-year-old director, Sonia Barron. Diet and exercise are a must for all of the dancers.
If you haven't had a chance to see this amazing dance troupe you're really missing something. If you'd like to schedule the Rockettes for an event, contact Sonia at (216) 531-6941.
