Q) I am overweight and finally ready to do something about it. I know that exercise is a big part of it, but I'm not really in good enough shape to do much. PLUS - I admit if I don't see pretty immediate results chances are I'll give up. Any ideas about something I could do that will help take off pounds quickly, but not be so strenuous that I can't do it - and give some quick results?
A) Any and all activity will help. Try to walk as much as possible and as time progresses, you will be able to speed up and add some bounce and exaggeration to your step. If you have read any of my columns, you should know by now that it is not only dangerous to take pounds off quickly, but usually non-lasting. My best advice is to join a group like Weight Watchers or buddy up with a friend. Working with others on a fitness goal helps a great deal with motivation. If you lose as much as a pound a week (you can accomplish this by eating 500 less calories a day - two brownies), you will drop 52 pounds in a year.
Q) What really matters - time spent or level of difficulty? If I walk leisurely for a longer time, is at as effective as walking strenuously for a shorter time?
A) Actually, more strenuous walking will produce a faster heart rate, thus will burn more fat calories and also help strengthen your heart muscle. I would also couple this with deep breathing, because the extra oxygen is excellent for the heart and it has been proven that more oxygen going to the brain cuts down on memory loss. Keep increasing the length of time walking strenuously with intervals of leisurely walking in between.
As always, check with your own healthcare professional before undertaking any diet or exercise program.
