Different Colors and Variations of Flowers
Your questions answered by
Michael Day of Flowerville

Q.What would you recommend sending to a funeral home that isn’t mums and carnations? I’d like to develop a “signature” arrangement but I’m at a loss as to what to include?

A.A signature item to send for a funeral is an excellent idea. You may want to come into the shop and see photos if you are not familiar with different styles of arrangements or types of specialty blooms.

Choosing one type of bloom arranged or a single color tone arrangement is a nice alternative to the mixed floral look. Remember, sometimes less is more!!

But that can also apply to the price of your signature piece! More unusual blooms cost more!

Don't forget about using green plants & blooming plants. A single type or combination of plants in a certain container is a nice alternative to cut flowers! Maybe a simple, elegant orchid plant the family can take home....small, simple, understated, but elegant!

My personal choice is an arrangement of all white blooms. Classic, elegant & in some way, reverent.

Q.Are there different types of poinsettias or just different colors? I want to get some that have the large, broad leaves and they seem to be a shorter plant.

A.There are MANY different varieties of poinsettias!

Just look at the variety of colors!! Certain varieties will have certain traits. It's best to stop in & explore the options & determine your favorite!

Newer varieties include plumb tones & red with pink splashes of color & the Winter rose, a tight, curly bloom resembling a large rose!

Different growers raise different varieties of plants and different conditions may make the same variety look slightly different.....taller, pale color, shorter & full, etc.

Enjoy the hunt for that perfect plant!

Q. I am tired of the traditional fall colors for flowers. Are other flowers not available during this season or why are we limited to the browns and yellows during Fall?

A. You are NOT limited to traditional fall colors!!

Think of the beautiful cornucopia cascading with autumns bountiful harvest! Lots of color!

My particular favorite are the grapes, plumbs, & garnet reds of autumn. Use various cream & green shades, berry shades & all the purple shades!

They look fabulous & work so well during this wondrous season!

Q. Any suggestions for Fall (live) flower decorations? Most seem to be dried flowers

A. There are many things to use to decorate for fall! It all depends on where you want to decorate.

Combine fresh fruit, vegetables, whole nuts, leaves & grasses in a basket for a simple, seasonal accent on a table or counter top. Combine small blooming plants, ivy & leaves.

Add fresh flowers to any combinations of nature's bounty & you have a beautiful floral decoration.

Don't forget to use seasonal gourds, mini pumpkins, wheat & Indian corn, all seasonal favorites.

Q. Hello- I am getting married in Vegas and want to have an orange bouquet.

I can have any flowers I want with the wedding package, but the only orange flowers I know of are gerber dasies and maybe some tropical ones. I wanted to go a little bit of an untraditional route, any suggestions?

Thanks-Angee

A. Dear Angee,

There are many beautiful orange blooms to consider.....the time of the year may affect availability & price.

Suggestions are: Orange roses...traditional bloom, dramatic & striking color, Orange lilies, Birds of paradise (orange in part w/ purple accent) Orange minni calla lilies, orange freesia, alstromeria, tulips, zinnias, snapdragons, pincushion protea, dahlias, celosia, carnations, orchids.

These, I hope are helpful suggestions to find the look you'd like!

Best wishes on your special day!
