Q. I am 74. Are there any exercises to help my sciatic nerve (my left back and down my left leg hurt when I sit)?
A. First of all, I suggest checking with your doctor before you take on a new exercise.
There are different reasons for sciatica and without knowing why you have pressure on the nerve, I would hesitate to suggest an exercise.
Mild stretching could help and abdominal work that will strengthen the back could also help. The chair you are sitting in may also be a culprit.
The only suggestion I can make with little information is to be as active as you can - walking and swimming are helpful, but be sure to follow both with stretching.
Q. My Dad is hypertensive and 60 years old. Can he use an abdominal belt? Could you give me a detailed answer as to why he can or cannot?
A. I don't suggest an abdominal belt for anyone, no matter what their age or fitness condition.
For a detailed answer check out my column on abdominal belts.
And since writing that article, I have received many fitness bulletins describing burns and other injuries from using the belt.
